Phobias

What do I know?

As an ex-victim of a phobia (see the “About” page) I’m all too aware of just how debilitating a phobia can be.  I’m also fully aware of how effective and simple the treatment is; in fact I was so overwhelmed by my experience that I changed my career, retrained as a therapist and apart from running my own therapy practice I’m also a Clinical Hypnotherapist for Anxiety UK, formerly the National Phobics Society.

What is a Phobia anyway?

Whether it’s a fear of flying, spiders, heights, cats, dogs, birds or public speaking, all phobias work in the same way.  I tend to think of phobias as a sort of psychological Anaphylactic Shock.  With Anaphylactic Shock the immune system goes overboard when trying to protect the body from a perceived threat such as a bee sting, peanuts or some other food etc.  It’s the same with the unconscious mind of a phobia victim; the mind perceives a threat but instead of triggering the normal “fight, fright or flight” mechanism it goes into overdrive and the whole event becomes traumatic and terrifying for the sufferer.

OK – so now what?

The good news is that no one is born with a phobia!  Therefore ALL phobias are a learnt response to a perceived threat.  Now, if you’re smart enough to learn a phobia then you’re more than capable of unlearning it.

By using Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) we are able to quickly discover the strategies involved in running a phobia and we can then replace them with new strategies that produce a normal behavioural response to the old trigger. It really is that simple and most phobias can be dealt with in one session although there may be underlying issues that need to be addressed once the phobia has been removed.
