Imagine if tomorrow you could wake up in a world in which you could not fail. What would that world be like? What would you hear, what would you see and how would you feel? Think of someone you know for whom everything just seems to go right? Whatever they do just seems to work somehow? What is it about that person that is different from you? Why do they appear to breeze through life when other people feel everything is a struggle?
NLP can be used as an extremely powerful set of techniques that are used effectively in therapy and business and life coaching. It works at the very heart of who we are and how we communicate with ourselves, with the outside world, how we see the outside world and how we think the outside world sees us.
NLP sounds very complex so lets break the term down:
Neuro: – The Nervous System (body and mind). This is where we gather our information about the world from our five senses: sight, sound, touch, smell and taste.
Linguistic: – This is simply how we communicate through pictures, sounds, emotions, taste, smell and words.
Programming: – The thought processes we use to create our behaviour.
So simply put, neuro linguistic programming or NLP is about the language of the mind and how we can use it to produce a positive outcome. It works by allowing us to change the mental programmes we run for specific events such as phobias and limiting beliefs. Nobody is born with a phobia; it has to be learned; we have to know where and when to run the phobia programme, we need to learn when to scream, jump, run, increase heart rate, lower blood pressure and dilate pupils, all in less than a second. When you think about it, it’s quite incredible that we ever get a phobia in the first place.
If we are smart enough to learn such a complicated process then we are more than capable of unlearning it
Hypnotherapists, NLP practitioners and life coaches use NLP to look for the strategies we create for everyday situations such as getting out of bed, eating, socialising, working, lovemaking and even going to the loo. We can find, alter or even replace strategies that have a negative effect on behaviour thereby removing phobias and controlling eating disorders for example.
